Hans Christian Andersen Theater bring’s totally awesome musical to the stage


Some of the most popular phrases from the 1980s were words like “awesome,” “gnarly,” and “totally.” They were all words to describe something great or cool. Those ’80s words could also be used to describe this weekend’s musical performance, “Back to the ’80s,” by the Hans Christian Andersen Theater. Patrons are encouraged to wear their favorite ’80s attire as there will be a prize for the best-dressed. Audience members are also encouraged to sing along to the totally rad ’80s songs.

I can’t believe I haven’t thought of this before, but now that I have I’m going to be filthy rich! In fact, if you’ve been meaning to call me to say hi, now is probably the time; by this time next year, I’ll be too important to take your call.  I credit Nevin (my sweet patootie) with giving me the idea. This in no way means I’ll be sharing the money with her, however. Sorry, sweetie. But I will at least pay to get the struts fixed on your van. I can do that much, I guess. But I digress.

Montcalm County residents sound off about Pride event, which will proceed as planned at county park

The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners typically spend their meetings quizzing department heads about budget requests, paying bills and hearing routine updates from local officials. However, Monday’s meeting featured drag performers in full makeup, finger-snapping (instead of applause), Bible verses being read aloud, exhortations about going to heaven or hell and standing room only on the third floor of the county Administrative Building in downtown Stanton.

Greenery returns to downtown with hanging baskets, planters, trees

As the clock steadily turns spring into summer this month, a little bit of green has returned to downtown Greenville in the form of new trees, plants and flowers. During Monday’s meeting of the Greenville Downtown Development Authority, Greenville Assistant City Manager Heather Feazel informed members that the 28 hanging baskets that decorate the downtown district every summer had been installed.

Lakeview Elementary School hosts Field Day


The spirit of community and healthy fun was in full swing on Friday as Lakeview Elementary School held its second annual All-Day Field Day, an event that brought students, families, and local organizations together in celebration of fitness, friendship and fun. Throughout the day, elementary students rotated through 27 different stations, including relay races, team-building challenges, fun games, water stations, and an inflatable. With laughter echoing across the school grounds, the event became a joyful kickoff to summer.

UM Health-Sparrow Ionia celebrates 10 years of rural care


Dozens of community leaders and team members celebrated the 10th anniversary of the advanced new University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Ionia hospital on Monday, honoring a decade of growth and improved access to health care for rural residents.

The ladies of the M.E. Church will give an Out Door Festival on the grounds east of the parsonage on Tuesday evening. The parsonage will be open and tables provided for those who may prefer indoors. Croquet will be suspended and ice cream take its place for the evening. Everybody is invited to come and bring his friend. • Come one and all, old and young, to the Strawberry and Ice Cream Festival, given by the ladies of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, at H.M. Fuller’s, next Wednesday evening. The croquet ground will be lighted, the plays inspired by the band. A holiday will be afforded all. Do not let the occasion go without enjoying the pleasure.

Poppy Girl raises funds for veterans with a smile

Poppy Girl 2025 Mila Rumsey, 5, of Greenville raises $300 for local vets

From thank-you cards to gift bags, 5-year-old Mila Rumsey of Greenville has been involved in helping her mom find ways to support area veterans. This year, Mila took things a step further as the Poppy Girl for Greenville American Legion Post 101, as she aimed to raise as much as she could to support Greenville-area veterans.
