Former Greenville Department of Public Safety officer and firefighter Michael Malone died Dec. 1 following a long and courageous battle against cancer. Following his funeral on Monday, a procession was led through Greenville, passing by the GDPS complex, with his casket riding atop one of the department’s fire engines.

FREEThe Belvidere Township treasurer resigned on Tuesday, the third township official to step down in less than one month. Yolanda Lane, the former township clerk, ran for treasurer against incumbent Forrest Herzog, with Herzog winning the election in August 2024. However, Herzog resigned this past March and the board appointed Lane treasurer in May. Trustee Wayne Watts confirmed to the Daily News on Tuesday night that he was notified of Lane’s resignation earlier this evening.

After suspected power surge, NCG Greenville Cinemas reopens after temporary closure and evacuation
A suspected power surge resulted in a temporary closure and evacuation of the NCG Greenville Cinemas on Saturday, with no injuries reported. At approximately 3:27 p.m., the Greenville Department of Public Safety was dispatched to the report of an “electrical smell” that was detected within the movie theater located at 1500 N Lafayette St.
Greenville child abuse charges dismissed, again
A Montcalm County judge who dismissed child abuse charges against a man this past summer due to the prosecutor not being prepared for a preliminary examination has once again dismissed the charges, this time due to a lack of probable cause. A 41-year-old man from Coldwater was charged with third-degree child abuse, a felony. The alleged incident occurred on June 6 in the city of Greenville and was investigated by the Greenville Department of Public Safety.
Public meeting Wednesday on 2027 M-91 resurfacing project, road diet
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is hosting a public meeting on Wednesday regarding the planned 2027 resurfacing of M-91 from the Flat River to Peck Road. The meeting will provide information on the current design plans and the project schedule. The public is invited to stop by any time during the meeting to learn more about the project and provide comments.
JUST IN: GHS Principal Danelle Nauta announces retirement
FREE Nauta’s final day will be Dec. 31After only one and a half years as principal of Greenville High School, Danelle Nauta announced Monday in an email to students and families that she will retire at the end of the month. Nauta, 47, a 1996 GHS alum, was hired in the spring of 2024 following the retirement of former principal Michelle Blaszczynski. Nauta previously worked as an assistant principal at Caledonia High School before returning to Greenville.
Welch principal identified as educator found dead at Ionia school
FREEDouglas R. Welch High School Principal Jason Little was publicly identified as the staff member who was found dead in an Ionia Public Schools (IPS) building last week. Little’s funeral was held on Monday at Shiloh Community Church in Orleans, and all IPS buildings were closed Monday so that staff and students could attend.
