The number of local youths participating in 4-H may have experienced a decline over the last decade, but thanks to new Cloverbuds as well as adults who return as volunteers, the program is alive and well as fair week looms just around the corner.

A meaningful new event at this year’s Montcalm County Fair will be “Military Monday: Stars and Stripes and Summer Nights,” a day dedicated to honoring active military personnel, veterans, reservists, National Guard members and their immediate families.

Central Montcalm graduate reflects on leading the school's yearbook effortsHunter Briskey has helped put together his school’s yearbooks all four years of enrollment at Central Montcalm High School, filling just about every role along the way. “Yearbook may not be for everybody, but it was definitely a good fit for me,” he said. With his own camera and time, Briskey also spearheaded an effort to provide free yearbook portraits for any of his fellow students who were unable to afford an expensive senior photo package.

Montabella grad with love for singing, dancing and acting brings back her school’s theater programAlayna Foster loves the arts so much, she single-handedly brought back her school’s theater program. Montabella Middle School previously had a vibrant drama department, but when the pandemic struck in the spring of 2020, the program was one of the casualties, according to High School Principal Shane Riley. Even in the following years after the world began to get back to normal, the school drama program’s faculty adviser struggled to get students to sign up or show any interest. Enter stage right, Alayna Foster.

Brandy Bunting is a counselor at Montcalm Community CollegeBrandy Bunting has spent the last 21 years working with students at the institution where she began her higher education journey. Brandy first came to Montcalm Community College as a student in the late 1990s and returned in 2004 as an adjunct instructor. In 2006, she became an adjunct counselor. She received two full-time counselor appointments in 2008 and 2009 and was hired as a full-time faculty member in 2009. Her primary role is as a counselor, but she has also taught psychology, sociology, political science, and general education courses. Brandy earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling, both from Michigan State University.
MCC INSIDER: Montcalm Heritage Village hosts Music in the Village on June 21
Join us at Montcalm Heritage Village on Montcalm Community College’s Sidney campus on June 21, for some locally sourced entertainment. Heritage Village will host local band The Unknown Legends from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is by donation and refreshments will be available for purchase at the event.
