M-66 Corridor Committee hears grant updates on ‘Meijer hill’ path project

The M-66 Corridor Committee continued discussion Friday of the various options for a non-motorized pathway that will make “Meijer hill,” as it’s colloquially known, more accessible for individuals who don’t drive. At their previous meeting in April, committee members voted to submit an application for a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Court says ‘no bond’

An Ionia County judge on Monday denied setting a bond for a Kentucky man who was arrested at an Indiana rest stop for the alleged felony kidnapping of a 14-year-old Ionia County girl. The Ionia County Brownfield Authority met Tuesday morning and revealed updates on a few of the outstanding projects the group is continually monitoring.At the group's previous meeting in April, Chair Julianne Burns indicated that the former Harker Middle School had been purchased by the Saranac Housing Commission and was under development. Ionia County increases fees for vaccines, road permits

The Ionia County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday updated some of the fees charged by the Health Department and the Road Department. The Health Department's immunization administration fee will double, from $10 to $20, starting Oct. 1. Health Officer Haleigh Leslie told commissioners the fee had not been increased for more than 20 years, and that the new $20 fee would still be $3 less than the $23 that both Medicaid and most neighboring local health departments charge.... Revised nuisance ordinance irks Grattan Township residents

Township residents have taken exception to language in the revised nuisance ordinance, adopted in May, charging that it could be abused during petty neighbor disputes. The ordinance begins with, “No person shall engage in any conduct, action, use or activity which annoys, injures or endangers the safety, health, comfort or repose of the public or the occupant of a dwelling on an adjoining or nearby lot or parcel.”... Grattan Township residents speak out against zoning administrator

Decisions made by this township’s Zoning Administrator Ryan Carrigan dominated public comment at the July 14 township board meeting. First to speak from the packed audience was Joseph “Luke” Young of 7485 Ravine Drive. Hard work comes together

A year of hard, dirty work paid off with more than half a million dollars going to young 4-H members during the annual large animal livestock auction, held Thursday afternoon and into the evening at the Ionia Free Fair covered arena, attended by hundreds of people. Bidders spent a total of $460,559.75 on beef cows ($128,128), sheep ($62,810), swine ($248,678.25) and goats ($20,943.50) at the auction. When you add the $41,405 made by 4-Hers participating in Wednesday's small animal sale, the profits made by local youths and their animals totaled $501,964.75.... READ MORE >

Lakewood High School senior Kenzie Everett raised Juju, this year's Ionia Free Fair grand middleweight champion steer, and she also showed a couple of pigs. Now 18 years old and therefore coming to the end of her time in the youth organization, the Lake Odessa woman said she's been showing animals at the Free Fair as a 4-Her the past four years; she has experience showing animals since she was a small child....
