MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — Eight people, including five children, were injured in a pickup truck versus horse-drawn buggy crash Tuesday, and an infant died the following day.

The accident occurred around 5:19 p.m. on Dickerson Lake Road east of M-91, according to the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post.

According to police, a pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Dickerson Lake Road when the driver attempted to pass a buggy and noticed an oncoming vehicle. The pickup truck driver then went back into their own lane and struck the buggy.

There were five children, all under the age of 5, and two adults in the buggy. All five children were transported to the hospital in serious to critical condition.

A 4-month-old baby girl died at the hospital on Wednesday.

A 2-year-old boy remains in critical condition, a 1-year-old girl is in stable condition and the two other children have been treated and released from the hospital.

The 24-year-old mother in the buggy was also transported to the hospital in critical condition and she remains hospitalized in stable condition. The male adult in the buggy had minor injuries.

The male driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries.

Due to its injuries and suffering, the horse pulling the buggy had to be euthanized.

The crash remains under investigation, according to police.

“Please continue to keep this family in your thoughts during this difficult time,” said MSP Public Information Officer Michelle Robinson said. “This tragic crash is a sobering reminder to drive with patience and caution in areas where horse-and-buggy travel is a way of life.”
