NELSON TOWNSHIP — Just after 2 p.m. on Monday, a Kent County Drain Commission employee was inspecting drains along 21 Mile Road NE near Keller Avenue NE when they discovered a crashed motorcycle and a deceased rider deep in thick grass off the roadway.
The rider and motorcycle were not visible from the road, and it appeared the crash had gone unnoticed from the day prior.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded and began investigating the crash. Preliminary findings suggest the rider was traveling eastbound when he struck a deer, causing the motorcycle to leave the roadway and crash into the ditch. According to initial observations by the Medical Examiner’s Office, the crash likely occurred Sunday afternoon or late evening.
The rider, a 26-year-old man from Sand Lake, was wearing a helmet and protective jacket at the time of the crash. The Kent County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
