ORLEANS – The Michigan State Police were able to locate a missing man in the woods on Wednesday night using a helicopter.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of W. Long Lake Road near Ionia County’s Orleans around 7 p.m. for a missing 80-year-old man with dementia.

The man had been missing, without his required medication, for two hours prior to troopers being called while the family searched for him.

The MSP helicopter, nicknamed “Trooper 2,” was requested to assist and using technology was able to locate the man lying in a wooded area. Ground units were directed to the man’s location and made contact with him and provided necessary medical care.

“Excellent job by all involved and our eyes in the sky,” said MSP 6th District Public Information Officer Lt. Michelle Robinson.
