MCC INSIDER: Faculty Focus

Dean Gage teaches economics and government in Montcalm Community College’s Early College program

SIDNEY TOWNSHIP — Dean Gage is an Early College instructor at Montcalm Community College, where he teaches economics and government. He also serves as an adjunct instructor for MCC, teaching POLI 240 and BUSN 135.

“What’s most fulfilling for me is seeing students discover new ideas and develop a passion for lifelong learning,” Gage says. “I also enjoy helping them grow into thoughtful, engaged citizens.”

A native of Saranac, Gage earned his Bachelor of Science in Public Administration, Social Studies, and Business Education from Grand Valley State University, along with secondary teaching certification. He later completed a Master’s in Education at Ferris State University.

Dean and his wife, Julie, have been married for 30 years and are proud parents of three grown children — Alicia, Jacob and Sydney — and grandparents to Huxley, Kade and Kinsley. Their family also includes a beloved dog named Sunny. Together, they enjoy camping at their seasonal lot on Coldwater Lake near Mt. Pleasant, affectionately calling their camper a “rolling cottage.”

Outside the classroom, Dean enjoys golfing, fishing, hiking, reading, boating, and playing basketball. He’s also a retired boys’ varsity basketball coach, having coached for 25 years in Saranac.

He credits MCC Emeritus Dean of Arts and Humanities Gary Hauck as a major influence in his life.

“He’s been an incredible inspiration and has encouraged me to be the best teacher and person I can be,” Dean says.

Known for his patience and adaptability, Dean values creating a classroom environment where students feel heard.

“My students won’t always think like me — and that’s a good thing. I want them to build on their own values and beliefs, not just adopt mine.”

A few fun facts: Dean once sang in the 1982 Lowell Showboat choir with guest star Pearl Bailey, he touched Magic Johnson’s shoulder at the State Capitol, and he plays the drums. His first teaching job? Construction.

One day, he hopes to visit the Holy Land to explore the roots of his faith and walk in the footsteps of biblical history.
