JUST IN: Voters narrowly approve Montabella school operating millageFree Access

Voters narrowly approved an operating millage proposal for Montabella Community Schools in Tuesday’s election by 576 “yes” to 468 “no,” a difference of 108 votes.

The millage passed 337 to 292 in Montcalm County, 197 to 141 in Isabella County and 42 to 35 in Mecosta County.

The operating millage is on non-homestead property only and will generate $1.6 million in the first year the millage is levied (this year), which accounts for approximately 12% of the school district’s annual budget, according to Superintendent Shelly Millis. The 18-mill proposal has to be renewed by voters in order for the school district to receive state aid.

Montabella voters previously turned down an operating millage proposal in the August 2024 election by just 34 votes and voters in that same election also rejected a separate ballot proposal to renew a 1.5-mill sinking fund by 219 votes.
