JUST IN: Voters decline Home Twp. police millage ballot requestFree Access

HOME TOWNSHIP — Voters in Tuesday’s election declined to double the police millage in Home Township to expand the tiny police department.

The ballot proposal to increase the millage from 1.25 mills ($1.25 per each $1,000 of taxable value) to 2.50 mills for five years (2025 through 2029) to raise funds for police department operations failed by 172 votes to 105 votes, or 62% to almost 38%.

If it had been approved, the millage would have generated approximately $97,245 in its first year (on top of the current 1.25 millage for a total annual police millage of around $194,490).

Home Township voters in November 2024 declined by 82 votes a request to double the police millage. Voters in the August 2024 election had approved renewing 1.25 mills for police protection for six years, generating around $97,000 per year, and the failed police millage that November would have doubled that amount, so township officials are trying again in this upcoming election.

Home Township Supervisor Cindy Stratton previously told the Daily News that if the millage failed, the police department will continue at its limited capacity until the current millage lapses, then will be folded and eliminated.
