GREENVILLE — Lafayette Street (M-91) in downtown Greenville is scheduled to close periodically beginning Sunday, March 31, through Friday, April 5.

According to Greenville City Engineer Doug Hinken, the closure is for the removal of the large locust trees on M-91 and will be focused in the city’s historic downtown district.

MDOT has approved the closing of M-91 from M-57 to Montcalm Street starting on Sunday, March 31 at 6 a.m. until Wednesday, April 3 at 9 p.m. Then closing M-91 from Benton to M-57 starting on Thursday, April 4 at 6 a.m. until Friday, April 5 at 9 p.m.

Since this will be a full closure, there will be no street access or parking during this time.

“At this point, the contractor plans to start on Monday morning and will work from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day,” Hinken said. “You can expect to hear chainsaws, chippers, vac machines, loaders, and trucks during that time. I apologize in advance for the inconvenience and noise. We expect that the trees will come down quickly and hopefully, we will find the stumps are relatively easy to remove. This could take some time and they may need to continue the removal process during normal working hours in the parking lanes the following week. There is also a possibility that if the weather forecast is unfavorable, the contractor could start after 1 p.m. on Easter Sunday, March 31. We hope that does not happen, but it is a possibility that needs your awareness. We will appreciate your patience during this process.”
