EUREKA TOWNSHIP — An employee of a towing company was killed in an accident that occurred at Greenville Steel Sales Saturday morning.

According to Michigan State Police Lt. Pat Agema, emergency personnel were called to the scene of the local steel supplier and recycling center after a 26-year-old male, whose name is being withheld at this time, became trapped when the flatbed portion of a tow truck was being lowered.

Employees of J & A Towing of Belding were dropping off a hi-lo forklift, making their fourth trip to Greenville Steel on the day, when one of the employees became trapped after the flatbed of the tow truck was lowered back into place.

“The driver was rolling the flatbed back up into place, after they had just rolled a forklift off,” Agema said. “The other employee was on the passenger side, and the driver couldn’t see him. That employee got caught, trapped  in-between the flatbed and the frame of the truck. Life-saving measures were performed at the scene, but nothing could be done. He was declared deceased at the scene.

Agema said the death is being investigated as accidental in nature, adding that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also investigating.

“That is common practice for OSHA to investigate, anytime there is an accident on an industrial site, as they want to make sure all safety requirements were being followed,” Agama said. “The investigation has nothing to do with Greenville Steel.”

Montcalm County EMS and the Greenville Department of Public Safety assisted at the scene.

This is a developing story.
