Daily News welcomes new sports writer Meghan TrippFree Access

Despite being on the job for less than two weeks, Meghan Tripp has already been witness to a wrestling state finals run and a school-record number of victories for a boys basketball team.

Tripp became the newest staff member for the Daily News editorial department when she started her position as a sports writer on Feb. 12. Among her first stories and photos were Greenville wrestling’s regional championship over Allendale and Belding boys basketball’s last-second win over Hopkins that secured the most victories in the program’s history.

“It’s definitely a crazy time of year for winter sports,” Tripp said. “I couldn’t think of a better time to get started than right now when so many exciting things are happening for so many local teams. I’ve met some really nice people so far and everyone has been so welcoming during a time where so much is going on. A job like this is something I’ve wanted to do since I was in high school, so having the opportunity to do it is something I’m very excited about.”

A Lowell native, Tripp graduated from Grand Valley State University in April 2023 with bachelor’s degrees in multimedia journalism and communication studies. She worked on the school’s student newspaper, The Lanthorn, throughout her time as a Laker. Her roles included staff photographer, editorial intern and photo editor. Tripp was the photo editor for three years at the Lanthorn.

“Thanks to her work at GVSU, Meghan comes to the Daily News with lots of photography experience,” Managing Editor Darrin Clark said. “I’m sure our readers have already noticed her skills with a camera, which will be a great asset for our sports pages. She’s also a fine writer and we’re excited to have her tell the stories about our local athletes.”

Tripp most recently worked as a sports photojournalist for Fox 17 in Grand Rapids. Her duties there included shooting video content of sporting events happening around West Michigan, conducting interviews to be shown on air, editing film for broadcast and writing scripts for anchors.

“Meghan’s time last year at Fox 17 introduced her to the world of high school sports in West Michigan and she’s ready to get more in-depth,” Clark said. “Here at the Daily News, her camera will be a little smaller and her reporter’s notebook will be a little more full. I trust our readers will give her a warm welcome if they spot her on the sidelines.”

When she’s not in the office or interviewing local sports teams, Tripp enjoys spending time with her husband, her family and friends. In her free time, she enjoys reading, watching movies and listening to Taylor Swift. She’s also heavily involved with the color guard programs at Grandville High School and Caledonia High School.

“With the work I’ve done post graduation, I’ve had the opportunity to meet plenty of high school athletes as well as a small handful of professional athletes,” Tripp said. “Having experience with both, talking to high school athletes is more rewarding for me because they get so excited about sharing their stories with their community. Being the person that allows them that opportunity makes the job that much better.”

Tripp is off to Kalamazoo this weekend for Greenville wrestling’s state finals and then a full slate of district boys basketball games next week. You can contact her at mtripp@thedailynews.cc or leave a message at (616) 548-8290. Give her a follow on Twitter/X at @_meghantripp for game updates.
