Day Township may have a sunny name, but there was a definite lack of sunshine on local government transparency on July 14. The Day Township Board that evening considered a request from a solar developer for a tax abatement during a public hearing. The board then adjourned the meeting, waited for audience members to leave and proceeded to meet in a closed session with their attorney to discuss an oral legal opinion in a separate meeting which was never publicly posted — all of which goes against the Michigan Open Meetings Act and all of which came just moments after this reporter had cautioned township officials about violating state law.
