An acquired taste of Denmark

From disgusting foods to delicious cake, children embrace Danish culture at annual Danish Youth Camp

From playing a round of “Viking Chess,” exploring the celebration of Fastelavn and overcoming the fear of tasting salty licorice, red cabbage and pickled herring, children fully immersed themselves in a number of Danish traditions this week. The Danish Youth Camp, held at Baldwin Heights Elementary School while renovations continue at the Danish Cultural Center in Greenville, saw 18 area children come together on Monday and Tuesday, where numerous elements of Danish culture were presented. Co-directors Maureen Dodd and Lauren Gibbs, along with several additional volunteers, once again led the camp, which originated in 2013 by the late Carol Hansen and Nels Hansen.
