Helping ‘at its finest’

Shop with a Hero event brings Christmas joy — and plenty of gifts — to area children in need

As Morgan Cox walked up and down the aisles of his local Walmart on Thursday, the 10-year-old did so with a sense of joy and excitement not normally felt in a typical shopping trip.

Joining the fifth-grade Greenville student was Greenville Department of Public Safety Director Dennis Magirl, who not only assisted Morgan in picking out gifts for his mother, father, 4-year-old sister, and of course, himself, but provided an unforgettable experience.

The Ionia Meijer resembled the North Pole for 18 area children Thursday as they roamed the aisles accompanied by local law enforcement officers and emergency services personnel. Even Santa Claus was there to lend a hand.

The youngsters were selected by their schools in Belding, Ionia and Portland to participate in Shop with a Hero, an event organized by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with Meijer, which donated a $100 gift card to each child, who used it to purchase gifts for family members and themselves.
