A celebration of Christmas through music and dance will fill the Greenville Public Schools Performance Center once again this December.
Hark Up!, based in Grand Rapids and under the direction of Greenville native and 1975 Greenville High School graduate Chris Hansen, will return Dec. 8 to perform its annual “Christmas Hometown Style.”.
Conducting from the 50-yard line of Legacy Field on a warm, spring evening in May, Susan Gould could be observed relishing every note and chord that emerged from her band students as they performed an outdoor concert to the delight of family and friends.
For the students, it was both their first and final live concert of the year, a year that was plagued by interruptions, cancellations and numerous safety restrictions and protocols due to the coronavirus pandemic.
With more than 50 students spread out six feet from one another on the stage of the Greenville Performing Arts Center on Tuesday evening, Susan Gould wasn’t certain what kind of experience the first orchestra concert in over a year would deliver for her students.
But halfway through the concert, as she made her way to the rear of the stage to play along with her students on the flute, a student whispered to the high school orchestra director as she passed by.
