Belding man charged with fleeing police, attempted meth delivery in Montcalm County

A Belding man was arrested after an alleged police chase and attempted meth delivery in the early morning hours of Thursday.

At approximately 12:45 a.m., a green Ford Ranger pickup was seen to disregard a stop sign on Deaner Road at Wyman Road in Home Township.  When a traffic stop was attempted by a Montcalm County sheriff’s deputy, the driver — later identified as Antonio Michael Rushford, 44 — allegedly began to flee.

JUST IN: Stanton woman pleads to March 2020 murder of young girl she was babysitting

A Stanton woman accused of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs when she killed the young girl she was babysitting accepted a plea offer from the Montcalm County Prosecutor’s Office on Friday afternoon.

Kellie Jean Barthel, 37, pleaded no contest in Montcalm County Circuit Court to second-degree murder in the death of Vayda-Kay Vasquez, who was almost 2 years old when she was found dead on March 2, 2020, at a residence on West Stanton Road near Hillman Road in Douglass Township.

An Ionia County judge opined at a Portland man’s sentencing that his attorney painted a more ominous picture of the client’s health in previous hearings than documentation from his doctor suggests. 

Court of Appeals denies Greenville man’s appeals related to meth conviction

The Michigan Court of Appeals denied a Greenville man’s appeal regarding his jury trial conviction for delivery of methamphetamine, second offense.

Gregory Michael Perry, 39, was sentenced by Montcalm County Circuit Court Judge Ronald Schafer in October 2019 to from six years and eight months to 40 years in prison. Perry’s defense attorney was Lori Shearer.
