Lyons woman sentenced for failure to care for animals in ‘deplorable hygiene’ case

A Lyons woman was ordered to pay $9,000 in restitution and to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after failing to care for multiple animals in her home in what an Ionia County judge called a case of “deplorable hygiene.”

Maranda Christane Morris, 37, appeared for sentencing on Sept. 20 before Ionia County Circuit Court Judge Ronald Schafer.

Virginia Ferris of Lyons in Ionia County was one of 24 volunteers recently recognized by the Michigan State University Extension for a half-century or more of service to Michigan 4-H.

Ferris and the others were honored during National Volunteer Week April 17-23.
