The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners on Monday made good on their intention to obtain new legal counsel.
Commissioners voted 8-0 (with Commissioner Scott Painter of Greenville absent) to hire the Grand Rapids-based Mika Meyers law firm to represent the county, effective immediately — replacing the Grand Rapids-based Varnum law firm.
The Montcalm County Board of Commissioners are looking for new legal counsel after repeatedly feeling that they have been receiving poor advice from their current law firm.
The topic came up during Monday’s county board meeting when Commissioner Adam Petersen of Montcalm Township referenced a Collective Bargaining Committee meeting which was scheduled for Aug. 17 but didn’t end up meeting as only Petersen and Commissioner Patrick Q. Carr of Lakeview were present, which wasn’t enough for a quorum. Also present at the gathering were county attorney Luis Avila from the Varnum law firm, as well as Sheriff Mike Williams.
