Six students receive help with college tuition

Six college-bound students pursuing careers in the medical field have been awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Spectrum Health Foundation and medical staff at United Hospital in Greenville and Kelsey Hospital in Lakeview.

Joel Visser hasn’t lived in Michigan in nearly 20 years.

The Rockford native left his hometown for the University of Toledo in 2003 and didn’t look back, staying in the Ohio area for a large portion of his adult life. He had built a family of three with his wife, Jess, a native of Toledo, and was establishing himself as a known basketball coach in Ohio.

Greenville’s Schroeder places 42nd at D2 golf finals

Greenville freshman Sutton Schroeder was one of two local golfers, along with Belding’s Mason Anderson, to qualify for the MHSAA state finals as an individual and golfed at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University on June 10 and 11.

In a field of 117 golfers, Schroeder scored an 84 on day one and an 80 on day two, finishing with a score of 164, placing him 42nd in the field.

‘Romeo and Juliet’ brings romance and tragedy to Tower Riverside Park

Greenville High School’s Yellow Jacket Theatre partners once more with the Greenville Community Center to present “Shakespeare in the Park: Romeo and Juliet” today and Saturday at 7 p.m. in Tower Riverside Park.

The program is made possible through a generous grant from the city, and it offers opportunities for area actors from ages 12-20 to learn and perform Shakespeare in a unique setting that puts on the play all around the audience. The program is free to the public and will feature one 10 minute intermission during its two hour runtime.

Greenville softball’s postseason run ends early at the hands of Rockford; Rams beat Jackets 8-1 in first round of districts

Most days, the Yellow Jackets would be thrilled to see an 8-1 final score in favor of the home team at Hannah Field, but Tuesday was atypical.

Hosting the Rockford Rams for the first round of softball districts on Tuesday, the Jackets acted as the visiting team and batted first against Rockford, falling in defeat. A normal district foe for the Jackets, head coach Kristen Ritter wasn’t shocked to see Rockford take an early 6-0 lead in the first two innings.

The Greenville Yellow Jackets were ready to celebrate at Yellow Jacket Stadium as the clock ticked down under five minutes to go in Wednesday’s district-opener at home against Ionia.

Up 3-2, dominating the time of possession battle and shots on goal by a wide margin, the Jackets had every reason to believe they were the better team.
