Community First Federal Credit Union gift helps solidify merger of fire departments

When a fire call blares across the pagers of Lakeview District firefighters, residents can rest assured a response will soon be on the way.

Despite covering a footprint that includes not only the village of Lakeview but five townships — Cato, Maple Valley, Pine and Winfield in Montcalm County, along with Hinton in Mecosta County — totaling 180 square miles, a merger of two departments has appeared to pay dividends.

Belding wildfire destroys 42 acres of grass and woods area, no structures harmed

Doug and Cori Anderson were walking down the Fred Meijer Flat River Trail in Belding on Monday afternoon when they noticed smoke coming from nearby trees.

Upon some further investigation, they realized not only was smoke covering a portion of the trail, but so too were flames in various areas.

Belding City Council approves extrication equipment purchase

As the Belding Fire Department waits for its new fire truck to be completed, the Belding City Council granted a request to purchase new extrication equipment for said vehicle.

In October 2020, the City Council approved a plan to purchase a new fire truck for the price of $585,548, which includes some minor adds and deletions to the truck. That price included a $10,000 allowance for potential issues that could come up during the build process.

Montcalm County fire departments fight multiple blazes over weekend

Firefighters from departments throughout Montcalm County were busy fighting flames this weekend, whether they be from wildfires or structure fires.

According to Montcalm County Central Dispatch, fire departments responded to a total of 29 calls from 6 a.m. Friday throughout the weekend — 14 for wildfire calls and five for structure fires.
