A Greenville man will likely see a second-degree murder charge dismissed as a result of a plea deal in which he is pleading no contest to two other charges related to the death of a 5-year-old Greenville girl last summer.

Perry man pleads to Ionia County child abuse

A Perry man pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of fourth-degree child abuse in Ionia County Circuit Court.

Scott Lee Hill, 35, was in court with his attorney, Brendon Basiga, for a status conference on Jan. 4, when he accepted an offer by the Ionia County Prosecutor’s Office.

Assault, child abuse charges amended to second-degree murder

A Greenville man originally charged with child abuse and assault regarding the 5-year-old girl he was allegedly babysitting is now facing an amended charge of second-degree murder after the girl died. 

Armin Dzemil Hadzic, 30, appeared before Montcalm County District Court Judge Adam Eggleston via Polycom from the Montcalm County Jail on Tuesday afternoon to be arraigned on the murder charge; however, his arraignment was postponed.

One in 10 children will become victims of sexual abuse before they turn 18, according to Lori Kirkhoff, executive director of the Ionia Montcalm Secure and Friendly Environment Child Advocacy Center, otherwise known as the IM SAFE CAC.

Local organizations promoting child safety during National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Within the one-year span from February 2020 to February 2021, approximately 3,487 child abuse or neglect complaints were filed in Montcalm and Ionia counties.

According to figures provided by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS), those 3,487 complaints led to 1,363 assigned investigations throughout both counties. Those investigations then resulted in 409 confirmed cases of child abuse or neglect.
