A few years ago, I was invited to speak at a Memorial Day observance hosted by a local chapter of the American Legion. I was glad for the invitation to speak on such an occasion even though I had never worn the nation’s uniform. After all, Memorial Day is set aside for all Americans to remember, to respect, and to give thanks to God for those who sacrificed for our liberty.

The recent release of the American Bible Society’s 12th annual State of the Bible report showed a significant decline in the percentage of Americans who regularly read the Bible. When I heard the results of this survey, my mind went back to a Christmas long ago, and how the gift of a Bible made a difference in my life.
