If I ever start another column with the words, “I’ve been writing this column a long time,” I hope somebody slaps me upside the head.

It seems a lot of folks read those words, which began last week’s column, and assumed I was retiring. I’m not. I need the beer money. And even if I didn’t, writing is a hard habit to break.

Two of three finalists for the next superintendent of Greenville Public Schools made their first impression before district officials, staff and members of the community Tuesday evening.

During a special meeting of the Greenville Board of Education, candidates J. Eric Harmsen, the executive director of curriculum and professional learning at Grand Rapids Public Schools, and Brett Zuver, superintendent of Grant Public Schools, were both interviewed by the board — receiving the same 23 questions each — for more than an hour apiece.

Interviews will start at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 24

The Ionia County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday selected four county administrator candidates to be interviewed at a special, all-day public meeting on Sept. 24.

After covering their regular business in 30 minutes and a closed session discussion of just under two and a half hours, and with assistance from Michigan Municipal League search facilitator Jerry Richards, commissioners narrowed eight candidates down to four.

Elementary student with “cowboy” pistol observed on Ionia bus

Ionia Department of Public Safety officers responded to a report of a weapon on a school bus on Tuesday.

According to a statement from Ionia Public Schools, the weapon in question turned out to be a “cowboy-like” toy pistol in the possession of “an early elementary student.”

The Flat River Community Library is coming together with local businesses to get community members to use their library cards in a new and unique way.

The month of September is Library Card Registration month. Each year, libraries take this opportunity to remind library cardholders of what services they can receive, as well as encourage community members who do not have a library card to sign up for one.
