An Ionia County prosecutor and a defense attorney referenced seemingly conflicting lab reports and disagreed over the seriousness of charges in a fatal collision which left two cyclists dead and three others injured during a Make-A-Wish bicycle tour.

Mandy Marie Benn, 43, is charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death (both possible 15-year felonies), as well as operating while intoxicated second offense notice, meaning she is subject to an enhanced sentence.

A new social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum at Greenville Public Schools has been approved for elementary school students for this upcoming school year, while a more piecemeal approach awaits potential approval for middle and high school students.

During Monday’s meeting of the Board of Education, the board voted unanimously to approve purchasing and utilizing the Second Step SEL curriculum — a program that teaches various social and emotional skills such as emotion recognition and management, empathy, problem-solving, bullying prevention and goal-setting.
