County GOP to have new leadership

The Ionia County Republican Party is seeing a turnover in leadership in the wake of the Aug. 2 primary election results — including the likely appointment of a 2020 presidential election skeptic.

Ionia County Commissioner Georgia Sharp of Portland Township, a three-term incumbent and the current chairwoman of the county’s important Personnel Committee, was ousted as commissioner in the primary to Terence Frewen of Danby Township, a fellow Republican, by 711 votes to 410 votes.

I spent last week Up North, trying my best to check out of work and my phone, instead checking into my own internal conversation and the people, sights and sounds around me — as well as some of the things on my “want to do” list.

I walked my favorite 4 1/2-mile loop a few times, paddle boarded along the shore before the wind picked up, sorted through cluttered cupboards that have been waiting for attention, tried a few new recipes using veggies from our garden and — for the first time in as long as I can remember — sat on the deck with my coffee feeling … peaceful. I mean really feeling peaceful.

Generations of children have enjoyed riding on Sandy the Penny Pony.

Since Sandy is 60 years old this year, we’re inviting everyone to a birthday party to celebrate its history.  Sandy’s Birthday Party will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Flat River Historical Museum. Kids of all ages are invited; children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway was Police Appreciation Night, with another busy night with 129 cars in the pits, featuring a full show of all seven divisions.

In Late Model action, Derrick Hilliker of Midland moved from his 12th place starting position to win the event over Kyle Borgman of Muskegon, Brennan Bowen of Sheridan, Nate Hurley of Brown City and Riley Bowen of Sheridan. Tom Dussen of Muskegon, Hurley, and Brennan Bowen won preliminary events.
