A Belding man with a previous history of sexual crimes is charged with sexually assaulting a young girl three years ago in Stanton.

Larry Allen Smith, 72, appeared before Montcalm County District Court Magistrate Jason Evans last Friday to be arraigned on two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a victim younger than age 13.

Riverdale man sentenced for sex crimes in Richland Township

A Riverdale man was sentenced to 11 months in jail for sexually assaulting two young girls over a period of more than a year.

Daniel Christopher Shoop, 33, pleaded no contest on June 7 to two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving two victims younger than age 13.

Crystal Township, Sheridan hospital to benefit from new state budget

A local township and a rural hospital will both benefit from the state of Michigan’s fiscal year 2023 budget which was approved by the state Senate last Friday.

The budget, which now heads to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for her expected approval, calls for $6.6 million for Sheridan Community Hospital, as well as $300,000 for a park project in Crystal Township.

In approving the upcoming fiscal year’s budget, Ionia Public Schools continues to sit in a comfortable financial position with healthy revenues, expenditures and fund balances. 

During a June 27 special meeting of the Board of Education, Associate Superintendent of Business and Finance Adrienne Barna, participating via Zoom, presented her proposed 2022-2023 fiscal year budget for the board to review during a public hearing before adopting it later in the same meeting.
