As the 50th annual Frontier Days festival got underway from downtown Carson City to Haradine Park on Friday, attendees anticipated seeing Don Wertman and his VIPER hot air balloon tethered and waiting.
However, when cars began filing into the designated parking area, Wertman stood near his balloon basket outside of a silver enclosed trailer.
Saturday’s state track finals in Hudsonville weren’t anything new to Zane Forist.
The Carson City-Crystal senior has been here before in both the shot put and discus, winning All-State honors in both of his prior appearances. As a freshman, Forist placed second in the discus and eighth in the shot put — the state of Michigan was put on notice at that point.
Stuart Gould is pacing around the 40-yard line at Forest Hills Eastern’s Hawk Stadium on Saturday.
The fate of his state finals appearance seemed to be in the balance. He is hopping in place from foot to foot with coach Brandon Briggs. They’re anxiously waiting for an answer that was just not coming.
