No balloon rides, no problem for opening day of 50th annual Frontier Days

As the 50th annual Frontier Days festival got underway from downtown Carson City to Haradine Park on Friday, attendees anticipated seeing Don Wertman and his VIPER hot air balloon tethered and waiting.

However, when cars began filing into the designated parking area, Wertman stood near his balloon basket outside of a silver enclosed trailer.

CC-C’s Zane Forist leaves mark in Michigan track and field forever with two more state championships in shot put, discus

Saturday’s state track finals in Hudsonville weren’t anything new to Zane Forist.

The Carson City-Crystal senior has been here before in both the shot put and discus, winning All-State honors in both of his prior appearances. As a freshman, Forist placed second in the discus and eighth in the shot put — the state of Michigan was put on notice at that point.

Stuart Gould is pacing around the 40-yard line at Forest Hills Eastern’s Hawk Stadium on Saturday.

The fate of his state finals appearance seemed to be in the balance. He is hopping in place from foot to foot with coach Brandon Briggs. They’re anxiously waiting for an answer that was just not coming.

Cavanaugh Barker leaves state finals with four All-State medals

As a freshman, Cavanaugh Barker made it to the state finals in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, placing 11th and 20th respectively.

Since that fabled day on June 1, 2019, however, Barker has been shut out of what was his signature event at the state finals.

CC-C Eagles’ 1,600-meter relay team makes history, finishes runner-up at state finals

The CC-C Eagles were out of contention for their second straight team state title by the time the last event of the day, the 1,600-meter relay, was about to start.

There was something firmly on the mind of the runners, however — the school record.
