Lansing Catholic fights back from 14-point deficit, beats Ionia 57-55 in district semifinals

District basketball can often lend itself to teams unfamiliar with each other facing off in do-or-die basketball games.

Wednesday’s showdown in Portland wasn’t one of those instances — the two teams were quite familiar with each other.

Cory Schneider knew his Carson City-Crystal boys basketball team was in for a big fight. 

The Eagles arrived at their Division 3 district semifinal and stared down a NorthPointe Christian opponent that has scored at least 50 points in all but one game this season, consistently breaking the 60 and 70-point barrier throughout the campaign, including an 84-point performance in the quarterfinal against the host Saranac on Monday. 

Ionia County board moves forward after resignations

The first meeting of the Ionia County Board of Commissioners since the sudden resignations of Administrator Stephanie Fox and Director of Finance Linda Pigue last week drew almost a full house inside the commissioner boardroom on Tuesday. Up to 70 people logged into the meeting on Zoom as well.

Fox and Pigue resigned on March 2 after the county’s Personnel Committee overturned Fox’s firing of Road Department Superintendent Bud White, and reinstated him with back pay and benefits. 

Belvidere Township PC sends wind ordinance to township board

Draft will first be reviewed by Montcalm County Planning Commission

The township Planning Commission is sending its draft wind energy ordinance to the board after making a few more tweaks.

The ordinance will first be reviewed by the Montcalm County Planning Commission before going to a vote at the township board level.

Cato Township splits in vote to appoint new PC member

The Cato Township Board voted 3-2 on Monday to appoint a new planning commissioner.

Joe Main and Joe Sweet both expressed interest in filling the seat vacated by longtime member Kim Carr in January.

Ionia Public Schools announces Educators of the Month

Ionia Public Schools Associate Superintendent of Student Achievement and Human Resources Wayne Piercefield recognized Educators of the Month at the Board of Education meeting Feb. 21.

Each month the district accepts nominations for recipients of the honor from colleagues, administrators and other staff, as well as parents and students.

Memorials for Terry Westman added to Belding library

The Alvah N. Belding Library trustees and staff truly appreciates the contributions from patrons throughout the year that help our collection grow.

The following books are all in memory of Terry N. Westman and are ready for circulation. Members of the American Legion Post 203 have an annual golf outing every September in memory of their friend Terry N. Westman. Money raised in the event this past year has purchased the following books.
