When arriving at Ellis Elementary School for the start of school each morning, students have grown accustomed to seeing a wave of friendly faces from teachers and staff members, welcoming them in for another day of learning.
Recently, students walking into the building are now also greeted by another, somewhat fuzzier face — that of Ritz, a 2-year-old black Labrador retriever.
As the Ionia County Board of Commissioners continues to discuss who should receive COVID hazard pay, one commissioner shared that she’s been speaking with county employees and “morale is lower than I ever realized.”
During last Tuesday’s meeting, Chairman David Hodges of Belding referenced the board’s new ad hoc COVID Hazard Pay Committee, which first met on Nov. 12.
On Nov. 6, Montcalm Prevention Collaborative’s (MPC) Medication Disposal Work Team hosted a medication take back day at Sheridan Community hospital where more than 30 pounds of medication was collected. The event was held in conjunction with local law enforcement and Sheridan Community Hospital.

For many, attending high school and going to class every day is thought of as an opportunity to improve academic capabilities and social skills and ready students for the outside world following graduation.
While that statement rings true for Belding, there’s one additional piece the district is also looking at — mental health.
