When summer heats up in Michigan, many people flock to one of the state’s 11,000 inland lakes or numerous rivers to cool off. If you’re planning a fun day of rest and relaxation on the water, just make sure you look for algae before you dive in.
Algae are a large group of naturally occurring plant-like organisms found in water. Dense populations of algae are called a bloom. Some blooms are harmless, but some produce toxins, which can be poisonous to humans, animals, and aquatic life.

Come August, the streets of the city of Stanton are typically crowded with residents, out-of-town visitors, vendors and paradegoers to celebrate on a given weekend for the annual Stanton Old Fashioned Days festival.
Last year, that wasn’t the case as the Stanton Old Fashioned Days Committee made the difficult decision to cancel the event because of the coronavirus pandemic.

When the 2021 Greenville Yellow Jackets’ varsity football team takes the field in a week-and-a-half, the group will look very different from last year’s team.
This year’s Jackets are on their third head coach within the calendar year, will be sporting new offensive and defensive schemes and are down several players from their usual totals, as well.

He took the stage with a shining smile and a presence that showed he knew how to connect with an audience. Glenn Walker, aka The L Glenn Experience, then added some soulful lyrics, jazzy saxophone and a few dance moves.
Walker, a one-man band from Fenwick, put together a performance that resonated with the judges at the Stanton Old Fashioned Day Star Quest Talent Show, earning him the winner in the Age 14 and over Vocal and Instrumental category of the competition.

The Ionia County Commission on Aging (CoA) will resume in-person congregate meals service in Clarksville on Tuesday after the county Board of Commissioners approved an agreement with the village for continued use of its hall.
Requests by Commission on Aging Director Carol Hanulcik took up most of the new business section of the board’s agenda at the 45-minute meeting last Tuesday.

The Edmore village manager is one of four finalists for the job of Mount Pleasant city manager.
According to the Morning Sun, Justin Lakamper will be interviewed on Aug. 21 along with three other finalists — John Hanifan, city manager of Chelsea in Washtenaw County; Susan Montenegro, city manager of Leslie in Ingham County; and Aaron Desentz, city manager of Eaton Rapids in Eaton County.

In the age of Zoom meetings, texts and emails, many people still appreciate a “snail mail” card or letter. Residents in nursing home facilities in the Ionia and Montcalm area were treated to cheerful cards that contained a poem, colorful artwork and a personal letter from a student, inviting them to be their pen pal.
