Eight Carson City-Crystal student-athletes came into Saturday’s Division 4 state track and field finals with one goal — do anything and everything you can to win a state title.
Individual accolades were placed in front of all eight competitors but the individual success stories would ultimately lead to the team’s victory.
Whenever Zane Forist shows up to a track meet, it’s a big deal.
“He’s kind of like a rockstar,” said Carson City-Crystal head track coach Grant Woodman. “When we go to meets, it’s always, ‘That’s the kid from Carson City.’”
Allison Wichert came into Saturday’s track state finals seeded third in the 300-meter hurdles.
The Vestaburg junior is used to defying expectations after finishing fifth in the event as a freshman after being seeded ninth. There was no reason for her to think she couldn’t win a state title entering the race but she knew she’d have tough competition in her adjacent lane.
The Belding freshman walked off the track and straight to the high jump pit after winning her heat of the 200-meter dash preliminaries at the MHSAA Division 2 state finals on Saturday. She was the last remaining competitor to jump 5 feet, 3 inches, one of just four left in the competition.
