Jomar Williams, 22, died along with Carly Alcala, 17, of Greenville (Alcala was a student at Greenville High School).

According to the Michigan State Police, the accident occurred around 1 p.m. on Oct. 17 at 14 Mile Road at Wabasis Avenue in Oakfield Township. Police say a westbound Jeep Liberty driven by a 17-year-old from Grand Haven crossed the center line and went into the path of a Nissan Altima, striking it head on. Alcala, the passenger in the Nissan, was killed. Williams, the driver of the Nissan, was transported to the hospital by Aero Med. Williams was removed from life support on Oct. 22 after his organs were donated.

Williams’ father, Syron Williams of Okemos, takes pride in the fact that his son was an organ donor.

“He always said he wanted his life to save other people’s lives,” Syron said. “He was that guy.”

Syron said when his son was born, he ended up in a Big Rapids hospital with spinal meningitis when he was just 7 months old.

“He wasn’t supposed to make it,” Syron recalled. “When he made it, they told us he’ll never be able to talk or play sports. He was blessed to beat the odds. He was a guy who continuously beat the odds. He would say ‘too many people just speak about Christ, I’m going to be one to be about Christ.’ That’s why he was an organ donor.”

Jomar played football as a running back for Hudsonville High School, according to his father. A football game in remembrance of Jomar will be 3 p.m. on Saturday at Skinner Field in Cedar Springs. Anyone is welcome to attend.

“He wanted to be a pro football player and if that didn’t work, I was going to train him to be an MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter,” Syron said. “He was very athletic, scored on every team he ever played on. On and off the field, he wanted to carry the team.”

A memorial service is also planned for 4:30 p.m. on Monday, which would have also been Jomar’s 23rd birthday. Anyone interested in attending the memorial service can contact Syron Williams or Javena Distributing on Facebook for more details.

Along with his father, Jomar is survived by his stepmother, Jasheika “Hazel” Williams; his mother, Almaria Davis; brothers, Jatrevion Williams S. R, Kyron Williams, Kerrius Gardener, Zechariach Davis; sisters, Trevena Williams, Kerra Williams, Shatrece Davis, Shatrece Davis, Maya Davis, Densie Davis, William Davis and Lashanc Davis.

“Jomar was a good kid,” Syron said. “He loved his sports, he loved playing football. He had a big old heart. He’d do what he could to bless other people.

“He had a killer smile,” he added. “I will miss his smile.”
