Ready for rescues

Richland Township firefighters switch to open water rescue exercises after Bass Lake ice melts

On a sunny, windy and chilly Sunday afternoon, 20 members of the Richland Township Fire Department gathered at the Bass Lake public boat launch near Vestaburg and took turns rescuing each other from the water.

The open water training was originally intended to be an ice rescue training, but the unusually warm winter left the lake bereft of ice. Either way, it was their first opportunity to try out new equipment the fire department purchased last year through community donations.
