Stage cautions at NASCAR races have always felt awkward … then they didn’t.
NASCAR instituted stage racing in the 2017 season, beginning with the Daytona 500. These breaks were designed to help break the race up for strategy. The other part of it is to try and hold fan’s attention for longer. There are also stage points that the top-10 drivers earn toward the playoffs — which is a different topic I’ll touch on in the next “Revved Up” section.
