Greenville’s Schroeder places 42nd at D2 golf finals

Sutton Schroeder

ALLENDALE — Greenville freshman Sutton Schroeder was one of two local golfers, along with Belding’s Mason Anderson, to qualify for the MHSAA state finals as an individual and golfed at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University on June 10 and 11.

In a field of 117 golfers, Schroeder scored an 84 on day one and an 80 on day two, finishing with a score of 164, placing him 42nd in the field.

As Greenville’s No. 1 golfer all season, Schroeder was no stranger to tough competition in the O-K White and stayed mentally tough throughout the tournament, according to Greenville boys golf head coach Jason Bialochowski.

“The course set-up was probably the most difficult that we had faced all year and really required Sutton to have complete focus on each and every shot,” Bialochowski said. “I was really proud of how he handled the pressure of competing at the state finals against the best players in the state, but more importantly, how he persevered through a couple of tough bounces that didn’t go his way. He kept battling and grinding through every hole of the two-day event to a very respectable finish. I’m sure this great learning experience will only motivate him even more to return next year.”

Schroeder was named to the O-K White All-Conference team and showcased tremendous talent throughout this season, with an 18-hole average of 78. Bialochowski is excited for what Schroeder’s future has in store.

“I really can’t be more proud of Sutton as a young man and a competitor,” Bialochowski said. “His work ethic and determination to be the best is what really sets him apart and allows him to excel, especially at such a young age. He truly earned and deserved all the accolades and awards he received this year.”
