EUREKA TOWNSHIP — A 28-year-old Greenville man was hospitalized with multiple injuries after his car collided with a semi truck Friday evening near Greenville.
Drugs are believed to be a factor in the accident, which occurred around 5:52 p.m. on South Greenville Road (M-91) north of Airport Road in Eureka Township, according to Montcalm County Sheriff’s Det. Sgt. Steve Snyder.
According to Snyder, the Greenville man was traveling northbound on M-91 in a 2008 Ford Escape when, according to multiple witnesses, the Ford crossed the center line. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old Byron Center man was driving a semi truck southbound on M-91.
The semi truck swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision, but the Ford corrected itself at the same time and the two vehicles collided. The semi truck ran off the road and jackknifed.
Snyder said the driver of the Ford was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital with multiple injuries, including a broken femur, broken ribs and broken ankle, but he is expected to recover.
“We do believe that drug were a factor for the driver of the Ford Escape,” Snyder said. “We’re still awaiting blood results on both drivers.”
The semi truck driver was not seriously injured.
M-91 was shut down for several hours due to the accident.
Snyder said the Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Montcalm County Emergency Services, the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post, the Greenville Department of Public Safety, Bud’s Towing and Safety First Towing.
