Long lines are the norm, rather than the exception.
That could be changing soon, thanks to a corporation-wide $400 million renovation project slated for this year. Plans call for the remodeling of 32 of 224 stores chain-wide.
Most of those renovations will take place in southeast Michigan, with plans calling for $80 million in improvements at stores across the state.
The Greenville location is one of 20 Michigan Meijer stores receiving upgrades this year. Planned improvements include wider aisles, better lighting, more modern store layout and larger meat, produce, dairy and health and beauty departments.
According to Greenville Store Director Jim Gardner, work will begin in late June and continue through October. Along with the other Greenville location renovations, the pharmacy will be redesigned and expanded.
“Our goal is to provide a refreshed feel in a community that not only was the birthplace for Meijer, but a store that customers have continued to shop at since opening,” Gardner noted. “This allows us

The general layout and design of the interior of the Greenville Meijer store will undergo a remodeling process this summer that will bring the store up to date with more modern layouts and technology. Work will begin in late June and continue through October.
The location boasts more than 200,000 square feet and 300 employees. This is a considerable bump up from the facility store founder Hendrik Meijer opened in Greenville in 1934 with $338.76 worth of merchandise.
The store’s current location was opened in 2001 and remodeled in 2005. According to Meijer Public Relations Manager Joe Hirschmugl, upcoming renovations will be fairly extensive.
“While plans are still being finalized, work will primarily involve interior and some exterior,” Hirschmugl said. “We’ll make upgrades throughout to refresh the Meijer shopping experience. This will include new painting, signage and graphics throughout. General merchandise and apparel sections will be redesigned and new lighting added. The gas station will also be part of the remodeling project.”
In addition to the company wide remodeling projects, Meijer also plans to open new stores in Sturgis and Flat Rock, as well as seven out-of-state locations. Each of those stores is expected to employ 300 part and full time workers.
The Greenville Meijer will remain open throughout the entire remodeling project.
