Cagefighters work hard in training for a fight
GREENVILLE - Mixed Martial Arts cagefighting is growing in popularity in the Montcalm County and surrounding areas. Fighters put themselves through a lot of training in preparation for impending fights.

GREENVILLE - Amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters go through a lot of training before they enter a cage. Without the extensive training from experienced trainers that know what it takes to be successful in the cage, fighters face a greater risk of injury.

Promoters work to improve the sport of MMA
GREENVILLE - Amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promoters have a tough job to do.

Not only do MMA promoters have to try to put on a good show, with enough fights on the card and quality matchups, but local promoters also strive to put together a safe show for both fans and fighters.

Promoters of amateur MMA events do this for the love of the sport. The money isn't there yet but they are hopeful it will be. Promoters that cut corners, like safety needs such as doctors on staff, aim to increase their profit but put fighters at risk

Local doctor staffs area amateur events
CARSON CITY - Carson Family Care Center Dr. Lene Heinlen is a fan of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and boxing and is a ringside physician at many area MMA fights.

Heinlen is a family medicine physician and has worked in Carson City for nearly five years. She is a graduate of Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine.

"A few years ago a doctor at Carson City Hospital used to do Golden Gloves Boxing," Heinlen said. "I got into it with him and I really liked it. Then my brother heard about a mixed martial arts group that needed a physician and he referred me to them."

161 teams compete during the Greenville Gus Macker
GREENVILLE - The weather was great on Saturday and the rain storms much of West Michigan saw missed Greenville on Sunday.

In all, 161 teams ranging from youth to adult, weekend players to college athletes participated in the Gus Macker basketball tournament this weekend in downtown Greenville.

GRAND RAPIDS - Belding's Anderson Gravel nipped Western in a District 9 Little League baseball tilt on Thursday by the score of 8-6.

Belding's Garrett Anderson hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning with the score tied at 6-6.

Belding scored two runs in the third inning, one in the sixth and five runs in the seventh. Western scored one run in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to set the final tally.
