Fort Frontier facelift
CARSON CITY - Visitors to Fort Frontier Park in Carson City will enjoy a little more shade by the end of the summer after the Carson City Council voted to approve bids on building a new shelter at the park.

The new 14-foot by 24-foot open shelter will have a green steel roof nestled over the current picnic tables at the west side of the playground.

Crystal man gets jail for beating son with belt
STANTON - A Crystal man was sentenced to eight months in jail Thursday for whipping his 14-year-old son 15 times with a belt.

Richard Ralph Button, 59, was charged with third-degree child abuse, domestic violence and being a habitual offender. He pleaded guilty to child abuse and being a habitual offender second offense.

11th annual Summer Dance Party hospital fundraiser
MOUNT PLEASANT - The 11th annual Summer Dance Party is scheduled for Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 7 p.m., on the main stage of the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mt. Pleasant.

This year's event will be a fundraiser for Carson City Hospital, Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns, Sheridan Community Hospital in Sheridan, and Sparrow Foundation-Children's Miracle Network in Lansing.

CC golf outing benefits senior pitcher, other patients
CARSON CITY - The community is invited to come "scramble 'fore' a cure" during a very special golf event on July 24 at Overbrook Golf Course in Middleton.

The friends of Mike Grimwood, a senior at Carson City-Crystal High School, are organizing the event, hoping to raise funds to benefit Grimwood and local cancer treatment facilities.

CC lays off police officer
CARSON CITY - Less than a year after receiving a $175,607 grant for a full-time community police officer, the Carson City council voted 5 to 1 Tuesday night to accept a budget that included returning the grant back to the federal government.

CC-C schools kick off drive for millage
CARSON CITY - They passed it in 2006 and 2008. Now they're hoping to do it again on May 4.

About 35 people gathered in the Carson City-Crystal High School media center March 30 as Mike McCrackin and Chris and Tara Herald, chairmen of the Carson City-Crystal "Kids and Community" bond campaign, previewed the proposal for a two-year, 2-mill bond renewal previously approved in 2006 and 2008.

CC community cop visits CC-C schools
CARSON CITY - Nick Barbour, Carson City's first community police officer, spent March 24 at Carson City Elementary School, visiting a total of 13 classrooms with 20 to 30 pupils each.

Barbour brought along a new electric police scooter donated by Tom Hammond of Hammond Wholesale.

CC-C opens baseball season with a split
CARSON CITY - It was a tale of two games for the Carson City-Crystal Eagles as they opened their 2010 season with a split against Wyoming Tri-unity Christian.

The Eagles were blanked in the first game 10-0 and then beat the Defenders 5-1 in game two.

Sumner woman dies in car accident
EVERGREEN TOWNSHIP - A Sumner woman died after a broadside crash March 31 at the corner of M-66 and Sidney Road.

Police and emergency responders were called to the scene around 4:15 p.m.

CC-C leaders discuss school changes
CARSON CITY - While no schools will be closed at this point, Carson City-Crystal Area Schools leaders discussed a number of big changes to keep the district afloat financially.

Because of 2010-2011 budget issues, the district needs to make drastic changes to keep a balanced budget next year.

The Prosecutors: Montcalm County attorneys combine experience, confidence and efficiency
STANTON - Rick Dubridge is the new prosecutor in town.

The 29-year-old is the most recent addition to the Montcalm County Prosecutor's Office. He replaced Traci Akins, who relocated to Washington to be with her husband, who is serving with the National Guard. Akins had worked as an assistant prosecutor since October 2008.

Dubridge joins three prosecutors with almost three decades of experience - Prosecutor Andrea Krause, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Doug McFadden and Assistant Prosecutor Chris Hekman.

Bloomer Township supervisor resigns
BLOOMER TOWNSHIP - E.J. Horricks is stepping down after nearly a decade of leadership in Bloomer Township.

Horricks, 53, was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer last November. He recently announced his resignation effective March 28.

Hubbardston woman mourned by community after car accident
HUBBARDSTON - Jennifer Bogacki was almost always smiling, dancing or singing.

She was a devoted mother to two young children and loved her new job as a certified nurse's assistant.

Bogacki died Wednesday morning in a car crash near Butternut. She was 20 years old.

Carson City cops host community assembly
CARSON CITY - Nick Barbour would like to clear up a few rumors.

No, he is not the son of Carson City Police Chief Jeff Hilliker.

No, he is not the brother of Officer Justin Beck.

As for whether Barbour wants to be called by his local nickname, "Officer McYummy," "I'll just leave that up to you," the young officer told an amused crowd of about 50 people Monday night at "Meet My Officer," an informative community assembly at Carson City-Crystal Middle/High School.
