Greenville golfers win in rough conditions

GOWEN - The Greenville girls golf team battled through chilly temperatures and high winds to defeat East Grand Rapids and Northview on Wednesday at The Links of Bowen Lake.

The golfing conditions made it feel as if it was late October and not early September.

Reminga helping Belding to great start
BELDING - The Belding Redskins are off to another great start to their volleyball season.

The Redskins, district champions last year, are currently 19-2 overall. They are using a mix of talented seniors and some varsity newcomers to mesh on the court and create high expectations.

BLANCHARD - A longtime rivalry was revisited on Tuesday evening in the form of a volleyball match at Montabella High School.

The Mustangs and Vestaburg squared off in the best-of-five Mid-State Activities Conference (MSAC) tussle.

GHS golfer hits a hole-in-one
GREENVILLE - It took Greenville High School junior golfer Megan Altizer just three years to accomplish something most golfers only dream about doing.

Altizer, a member of the Greenville junior varsity team, shot a hole-in-one during competition at The Mines in Grand Rapids. She used a seven iron on No. 7 hole, a 91-yard par 3 for her first hole-in-one and the first in junior varsity competition under coach Dick Laurent.

Yellow Jackets 2nd in state
The Greenville Yellow Jackets girls golf team is off to another fine start to the high school golf season.

Playing against some of the top competition in the state in any division, the Yellow Jackets have earned themselves a No. 2 state ranking in Division 2 by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association.

EOS, Autumn Belles winners at Belding softball tourney
BELDING - A couple of thrilling championship games were the highlight of the Belding Blast Softball Tournament this weekend.

The Autumn Belles won the 12-and-under division when they threw a 4-0 shutout at Hudsonville in the championship game. A walk-off sacrifice bunt-error gave EOS a 5-4 win over the Grand Rapids Blaze "G" team in the 14-and-under division Sunday at Demorest Field.

P-W overcomes early deficit to stop CC-C
CARSON CITY - Before Thursday night's Central Michigan Athletic Conference (CMAC) game between Pewamo-Westphalia and Carson City-Crystal, the Eagles dedicated their new remodeled weight room in memory of their late coach Steve Houck.

The Eagles came out after the dedication ceremony and scored the game's first 13 points. But the Pirates rallied and scored 44 unanswered points and downed the home team 44-13 at Community Field.

Greenville runs through Union for second win
GREENVILLE - The Greenville Yellow Jackets scored 42 points for the second consecutive week. This time they scored all their points by halftime.

Greenville again dominated along the line of scrimmage while defeating the Grand Rapids Union Redhawks 42-21 at Black Field on Thursday night.

"I thought our offensive line was just unbelievable," Greenville coach Dave Moore said. "We came off the ball hard, so we were in their backfield before first contact. Any time you're doing that it's going to be a big night."

Eagles host CC-C Open meet
CARSON CITY - A pair of area boys and girls cross country teams ran as fast as they could on Wednesday at the early season Carson City-Crystal Open.

Belding and Carson City-Crystal battled five other teams at the Fish Creek Sportsmen Club. The Redskins boys ended the race in fifth place while the girls finished in the seventh slot.

Week 2: Tri County looks for victory
HOWARD CITY - It was a rough start to the 2010 football season last week for the Tri County Vikings.

The Vikings lost 33-6 on the road to Cedar Spring. The Red Hawks managed 480 yards rushing with two players topping the 100-yard mark.

GREENVILLE - The Greenville Yellow Jackets volleyball team did not have a good night against Morley Stanwood on Tuesday.

The Mohawks, 2009 district champions, cruised to a straight set win over the Yellow Jackets 25-9, 25-13, 25-9 at North Gymnasium.

Greenville cruises past Lakeview in boys soccer
LAKEVIEW - The Greenville Yellow Jackets experience and skill were too much for a young Lakeview Wildcats team on Monday.

Greenville's Michael Hebert's second goal of the night at 35:41 of the second half gave his team an 8-0 mercy shortened victory.

Redskins top Greenville to win Daily News Volleyball Invitational
STANTON - The Belding Redskins used their height, power, quickness and teamwork to win the annual Daily News Volleyball Invitational at Central Montcalm High School on Saturday.

The Redskins defeated the Greenville Yellow Jackets 25-11, 25-22 for their second consecutive tournament title and fourth in five years.

CM drops Lakeview in season opener 36-14
LAKEVIEW - Central Montcalm's rushing attack proved to be too much for Lakeview on Friday during the 2010 gridiron opener for both squads.

The Green Hornets rushed for 319 total yards en route to a 36-14 Central State Activities Association (CSAA) triumph over the Wildcats at Kos Field.

GREENVILLE - With just nine regular season football games and six needed to make the postseason, every team is hoping for an opening night victory.

The Greenville Yellow Jackets earned a 42-7 opening night win over longtime rival Belding at Black Field. The Yellow Jackets dominated defensively and excelled on special teams with four blocked punts.
