GREENVILLE - Greenville's girls basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Lowell 45-43 on Friday evening in the first Pink It, Sink It game in the North Gym.
A combination of too many turnovers and good play from inside the paint from the Red Arrows proved to be the difference in the game. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over 27 times in the game.
"We could not get around Lowell's post play and they were able to make easy passes and get to the basket," said Greenville coach Jeremy Hyler. "Also with that many turnovers you will have a hard time winning games. But we also took advantage of forced turnovers and were able to score some points too."
Lowell had a 15-11 advantage when the opening quarter ended. But the Yellow Jackets outscored the Red Arrows 15-9 in the second stanza and took a 26-24 lead at halftime.
Mackenzy Nichols scored nine points for Greenville in the first half with three three-pointers.
Lowell outpointed the Yellow Jackets in the third frame 10-4 for a 34-30 leadwhen the period was over.
With 1:31 left in the regulation Lowell had a 42-39 lead when Erica Bigelow made a lay up to move Greenville to within one point at 42-41. But the Red Arrows scored three points to the Yellow Jackets two during the rest of the game to hold on for the win.
"We took advantage of our size and were able to get in the paint and score," said Lowell coach Danielle Gallert. "Greenville fought hard and did a nice job. They battled us hard all night long."
Nichols led paced the Yellow Jackets with 12 points while Bigelow tallied seven.
"Our girls did a nice job tonight and they played hard," Hyler said. "We really played up to our potential and I am proud of the girls for playing as hard as they did. I think we can beat them next time we play."
Bryleigh Loughlin and Katie Tompkins paced Lowell with 12 points apiece.
Greenville now stands 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Yellow Jackets will travel to the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament on Monday to tangle with Portland.
Lowell improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.
