Senior CM basketball player set to start season

STANTON - Central Montcalm's boys basketball team got a preseason test Monday night with a home scrimmage against Fulton with Green Hornet seniors like Zach Rydahl striving to help their squad be a contender in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA).

The 6-foot-3 CM senior is in his second full season on the varsity. Last season "was a difference coming up and playing on varsity and starting," he said. "I made a good adjustment to it. It went pretty good."

Rydahl, who also played football, said his summer time was limited for hoops as he trained to get ready for the gridiron. But he's had a productive preseason in getting ready for the basketball court.

"We had that week off (after football season ended). A few of us came in a couple days and were shooting around to get our rhythm back," Rydahl said. "My role is to be a big body and be able to do pretty much anything, shoot, rebound ..."

"I think I dribble the ball well and shoot well. I'm trying to get better at boxing out and rebounding and being a little stronger down low."

Central opens the season at home on Dec. 8 against Tri County and entertains Morley Stanwood on Dec. 11 in Central State Activities Association (CSAA) play.

"We have four returning starters from last year," Rydahl said. "We have another good set of players coming up that were on JVs last year."

Rydahl indicated the Hornets would be playing plenty of up-tempo basketball.

"We're working on our conditioning and trying to get to that point of being able to run on everybody since we don't have all the size in the world," he said.

In the CSAA, "Reed City and Big Rapids are usually huge rivals when it comes to basketball," he said, adding that a scrimmage like Monday's against Fulton, "will give us into more of a game situation."
