News Tip:
HB5999 et. al May 5th, 2010 Purposed Michigan fireworks law designed to put small established Michigan fireworks dealers out of business by imposing fees 5X higher than neighboring states. Rep Harold Haugh (D) claims the fees will generate revenues in the millions of dollars in new business. In the same breath Rep. Haugh says "we don't want fireworks stores on every corner". Many smaller fireworks dealers in Michigan did express the fact that this bill would either put them out of business or create additional financial burdens onto them while struggling to survive in Michigans weak economy. It appeared that small established fireworks companies owners concerns fell upon deaf ears. The tempo of the committee meeting resembled a pay up or get out of town attitude.Rep. Haugh makes claims of all the new jobs this bill will create along with extra revenues for the state. This bill is sponsored by American Eagle Fireworks also known as !
Big Fireworks, testifing before the committee Mr. Jim Stajos says the fireworks selling season is "2 maybe 4 weeks per year." Summary of this bill does not add up and clearly needs the publics attention to this matter. 2 to 4 weeks per year, more Jobs? Extra revenues? Who in there right mind in Michigan with the economy the way it this or even in a great economic situation, is going to dish out extravagant fees as have been introduced, hugh cash requirements for up front cost, for part time jobs and a very small return, if any on investments made? House Bill 5999 et. al is Bad for Business, Bad for Michigan. Other Michigan companies like Meijer and Wal-mart from my understanding have also denounced this bill.
