CRYSTAL - Saturday's Crystal Run offered something old and something new.
Grant Woodman of Ithaca, a Crystal native, won the 5-mile race for the fourth straight year. Meanwhile, Greenville's Chelsea Prahl was the 5-mile winner in her first try ever at the race.
Woodman's winning time was 27:40.7. He handily beat second-place runner Steve Peabody of Belding, who had a 30:30.7 clocking.
Runners avoid hot conditions later in the day as the temperature when the race started at 8 a.m. was 63 degrees. The course includes portions of Crystal Lake.
"I was running alone by the last half-mile," Woodman said. "The weather wasn't bad at all. I was worried earlier this week when it got to 90 degrees."
Prahl, a senior at Greenville High School who runs girls cross country and girls track for the Yellow Jackets, was successful in her Crystal Run debut.
"I think I did pretty well," she said. "I never ran a 5-mile race like that. I had a stomach cramp that affected me a little at the end."
In the 3-mile race, Matt Chevanec of St. Louis, Mich., won in 17:24.9 for the men while Brandi Witter of Perrinton was the top woman runner in 20:56.7.
"It was my best time ever," said Witter, who also won a race at Lansing earlier this summer. "The course was fine."
"I felt pretty good," Chevanec said. "I haven't done any spring work or anything. The course was nice and the weather was fine. I slipped on some sand going around a turn but I did OK."
A total of 91 runners participated in this year's race, compared with 82 last summer.
