CRYSTAL - The annual Crystal Run the Lake will cut through the hot air beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday.
There will be both three-mile and five-mile runs with winners crowned in men's and women's divisions. The five-mile trek will lead runners entirely around Crystal Lake.
"It is such a scenic route," Crystal Chamber of Commerce President Janet Campbell said.
Forty runners already are preregistered. Competitors will be able to sign up at 7 a.m. Saturday at Crystal Elementary School. There will be a registration fee of $20.
Campbell said those who don't want to don running shoes during the hot August weather still will be able to participate.
"We love to see supporters come out to the event and cheer on our runners," she said.
People come from all over to compete or watch the run.
"It is great to have people come (to Crystal) from around the area," Campbell said.
The event usually brings in about 60 runners.
A 1992 Carson City-Crystal graduate has won the five-mile race each of the past three years. Grant Woodman of Ithaca, who ran cross country and track for both the Eagles and Alma College, finished with a clocking of 27 minutes, 28.9 seconds to defend his title last year.
Mark VanHoose won the men's three-mile run a year ago, Elice Davey of Rockford captured the women's five-mile run for the second straight year and Marie Henry of Belding won the women's three-mile in 2006.
Hot conditions also were forecast for last year's run.
"I was wondering how I'd beat the heat," Woodman said after his 2006 triumph. However, temperatures stayed in the 60s during the race.
Temperatures once again are expected be a factor this year. Forecasts call for a high temperature of nearly 90 degrees Saturday afternoon, but are predicted to be in the 70s during the race.
